Low-Volume and One-Off CNC Machining

How low-volume and one-off CNC machining is quoted - setup and fixturing costs, how to make a single part economic, and when a small batch is the right call. Operations are certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, with CMM inspection on every batch.

A single machined part is not a scaled-down batch - it is a different job, where setup and programming dominate the price. Understanding that is how you make a one-off part economic without sacrificing what it is for.

Why one part costs what it costs

For a batch, the price per part is mostly machine time. For a single part, it is mostly everything else: reading the drawing, planning the process, programming the toolpath, making or setting a fixture, and proving the first article. Those costs exist whether you make one part or a hundred.

So a single part is not expensive because machining is slow - it is expensive because the preparation is spread over one piece instead of many. That also explains why the price of the second part is far lower than the first.

How to make a small run economic

When low volume is the right call

Fixturing and how it is handled

A fixture holds the part so it can be cut accurately and repeatably. For a one-off, the fixture is often simple - soft jaws machined to the part profile, or a vice stop. For a small batch, a purpose-made fixture pays for itself because it shortens every part's setup.

The right question to ask is not "is there a fixture" but "does the fixture make sense at this quantity". At CHX Metal we build the fixturing that the quantity justifies, so a single part is not loaded with the cost of a batch fixture it will never use.

Briefing the shop so the quote is right

At CHX Metal there is no strict minimum order quantity, so a single prototype and a volume batch are quoted on the same basis, and a small first order can be run before a batch is committed.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No strict MOQ. We run a single prototype through to volume production, so you can validate a design before committing to a batch.

Why is one part so much more expensive than the tenth?

Setup, programming and first-article checks are one-time costs. On a single part they are not spread over anything, so they dominate the price; by the tenth part they are largely amortised.

Can you make a part with no drawing, from a sample?

Yes. We can measure a sample, produce a drawing for your confirmation and quote from that, but an original drawing is faster and removes interpretation risk.

How fast can a one-off part be made?

Prototypes typically ship in 3-7 days after drawing approval, plus about 5-10 days where surface treatment is required.
