Swiss-Type CNC Machining in China (Sliding-Headstock Turning)
70 Swiss-type lathes · Tsugami sliding-headstock · bar Ø1-20 mm · 5 million parts/month
Swiss-type CNC machining from China: 70 sliding-headstock lathes (Tsugami), bar Ø1-20 mm, ±0.005 mm, lights-out high volume. DFM and quote in 24 hours. Parts are machined from aluminium, stainless steel, brass, titanium and engineering plastics.
CHX Metal operates 70 Swiss-type CNC lathes in Shenzhen, China, led by Japanese Tsugami sliding-headstock machines. Swiss turning is the right process for small-diameter, long-slender parts that must hold concentricity and finish across very large volumes — and it is where a China supplier can offer the strongest cost position.
What Swiss-type machining is
In Swiss-type (sliding-headstock) turning the bar stock advances through a guide bushing and the tools cut right at the bushing, so the workpiece is supported at the point of cut. That rigidity is why Swiss machines hold tight concentricity and surface finish on slender parts — pins, shafts and micro screws — that would deflect on a conventional lathe.
Typical bar diameter is Ø1-20 mm, with length-to-diameter ratios well above 10:1. Live tooling and sub-spindles let us cross-drill, mill flats and complete the back end in the same cycle, so parts come off the machine finished in one setup.
Why source Swiss turning from CHX Metal in China
- A dedicated Swiss cell of 70 sliding-headstock lathes, so capacity is not shared with general turning
- Japanese Tsugami machines known for repeatability on long, slender parts
- In-house bar feeders and parts catchers for lights-out running on volume programs
- Turning and milling under one roof, so secondary operations stay in-house
- Shenzhen supply chain for bar stock, tooling and finishing at competitive cost
Machine park and capacity
Our 220-machine plant includes 70 Swiss-type lathes alongside 100 machining centers and 50 CNC lathes. Monthly capacity reaches 5 million pieces across the group, with the Swiss cell handling the smallest and most slender work. Volume programs run to a confirmed rolling forecast so the Swiss machines stay loaded and lead times stay predictable.
Materials and typical Swiss parts
Common bar stock: stainless 303/304/316, free-cutting steel 1214/12L14, brass C3604, aluminium 6061/2024, titanium TC4 and engineering plastics such as PEEK. Typical parts include contact pins, connector bodies, sensor housings, micro screws (M0.8-M3), shafts, valve pins and medical instrument components.
Tolerance, inspection and documentation
We hold ±0.005 mm on critical features, verified on a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Critical dimensions are checked on first article, at batch start and at final release. Every order ships with an inspection report; EN 10204 3.1 material certificates come as standard, and PPAP/FAIR documentation is available on request.
Lead times and how to start
Send your drawing (DXF/DWG/STEP/IGES) or sample with material, quantity and finish. Our engineers review manufacturability and return a quotation with DFM feedback within 24 hours. Prototypes ship in 3-7 days, production batches in 7-15 days. There is no strict MOQ, so you can validate a Swiss-turned design before committing to volume.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Swiss-type machining best for? Small-diameter, long-slender parts where the guide bushing supports the workpiece at the cut: pins, shafts, micro screws, connector and sensor components and medical parts, typically bar Ø1-20 mm with length-to-diameter above 10:1.
How many Swiss machines do you run? 70 Swiss-type sliding-headstock lathes, within a 220-machine plant. A dedicated Swiss cell means volume turning does not compete with general work for capacity.
What is the minimum order quantity? No strict MOQ — from a single prototype to volume. Unit price falls with quantity, so share your annual forecast and we will quote the most economical batch.
How do you control quality in volume? In-process inspection records accompany every order, with CMM verification on critical dimensions at first article, batch start and final release, plus EN 10204 3.1 material certificates.
