CNC Machining Cost in China — What Actually Drives the Price

Cost drivers explained · Itemized quote in 24 hours · No minimum order

How much does CNC machining cost in China? Material, tolerance, volume, geometry, finish: the five cost drivers, with an itemized quote in 24 hours. ISO 9001. Operations are certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, with CMM inspection on every batch.

There is no single price for CNC machining: cost depends on material, tolerance, geometry, batch size and surface finish. This page explains each driver so you can read a quotation properly — and then shows how to get an itemized quote for your own part.

The five cost drivers

Almost every CNC quotation is built from the same five variables: material, machining time, tolerance, order quantity and surface finish.

  • Material — free-cutting brass and 1215 steel machine fast; 316 stainless and titanium cut slowly and wear tools.
  • Machining time — a simple turned part may run in seconds, while a 5-axis part with deep pockets can take hours.
  • Tolerance — going from ±0.005 mm to ±0.005 mm adds inspection and slower feeds, and can double the price.
  • Quantity — setup, programming and fixturing are spread across the batch, so unit price falls quickly with volume.
  • Surface finish — as-machined parts are cheapest; anodizing, plating and mirror polishing add cost.

What typical prices look like

As an indication only, simple turned parts in free-cutting material often land at a few RMB per piece at volume, while a complex 5-axis aluminium housing can cost hundreds of RMB per piece. The figures move with every driver above, so a quotation is only meaningful when it is tied to your drawing and quantity.

We do not publish a fixed price list, because the same part can differ several-fold between a 100-piece prototype run and a 50,000-piece production run — a fixed list would mislead rather than help.

Why China is cost-competitive for machining

China is competitive not only on labour but on the density of its supply chain: bar stock, tooling, anodizing and plating are all available within the same industrial zone, which shortens logistics and iteration time.

CHX Metal adds vertical integration on top of that — 220 CNC machines, in-house surface finishing and an in-house CMM lab — so parts do not queue at outside subcontractors and cost is not inflated by extra handling.

How to reduce your part cost

Most quotations can be improved before a single chip is cut. The usual levers are:

  • Relax tolerances the function does not actually need — ±0.005 mm instead of ±0.005 mm can halve the price.
  • Choose a free-cutting material such as 1215 steel or C3604 brass where the application allows.
  • Specify a standard finish rather than a bespoke one.
  • Consolidate several small parts into one machined assembly.
  • Increase the batch size, or commit to a forecast so we can amortise the setup.

Send your drawing and we return DFM notes — which tolerances, features and finishes are driving the cost — together with the quotation.

How to get an itemized quotation

Send a 3D model (STEP, IGES, X_T) or a 2D drawing (DXF, DWG, PDF) with the material, quantity, critical tolerances and finish. We reply with an itemized quotation within 24 hours, broken down so you can see material, machining, finishing and inspection separately.

If your drawings are confidential we sign a mutual NDA before receiving the files. There is no minimum order quantity — a single prototype is fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does CNC machining cost? There is no single figure: it depends on material, tolerance, geometry, quantity and finish. Send a drawing and we return an itemized quotation within 24 hours.

Why do you not publish a price list? Because the same part can differ several-fold between a 100-piece run and a 50,000-piece run. A fixed list would mislead more than it helps.

Is there a minimum order quantity? No. A single prototype is fine, and the same process scales to volume production.

What affects the price the most? Usually material and tolerance, followed closely by batch size. Those three account for most of the difference between two quotations.

How fast is the quotation? We reply within 24 hours with an itemized quote and DFM feedback.
